PORTLAND AREA’S TRIMET PARTNERS WITH JUNAIO TO BRING NEAREST TRANSIT INFORMATION AND SCHEDULES TO RIDERS VIA AUGMENTED REALITY

Partnership Lets Riders Find Nearest Transit Stops with Live Schedules by Simply Pointing Their Mobile Smart Phones

Summary
Portland’s regional transit agency TriMet today announced a partnership with junaio to integrate transit data ranging from station locations, bus routes, to estimated arrival times, into a TriMet channel on the junaio 2.0 mobile augmented reality platform. Available free on the iPhone 3GS and coming soon to Android devices, junaio 2.0 features the TriMet channel to give riders easy and instant access to complete transit information on nearby stops by simply pointing their phone around them.

The app for your iPhone 3GS or for any Android device works by letting you pan around with your phone’s viewfinder and then marking nearby transit stops, distances, and real-time live schedules of upcoming transit. For example, a rider, by simply pointing her phone’s camera, can find the direction of the nearest bus station and gets a list of estimated arrivals for the next several buses to her destination.

The new augmented reality application – junaio – is the latest example of the innovative products and services utilizing TriMet’s open data feeds to help transit riders navigate and stay on top of transit schedules. By subscribing to  TriMet’s channel on the junaio 2.0 app, users can access information on nearby transit stops through a digital overlay made possible by utilizing the phone’s compass and GPS.  Users can also browse stops and schedules nearby within a specified radius using the Map and List view feature.

“Augmented reality intuitively lays out transit information for our riders” says Bibiana McHugh, IT Manager, GIS and Location Based Services for TriMet. “We are thrilled to have the augmented reality channel as another means of helping our riders get to their destinations.”
